Causes for early childhood cavities

Causes for Early Childhood Cavities

Plaque forms when food particles become stuck in the teeth. Tooth decay and cavities result from bacteria in plaque feeding on sugar and producing acid that damages enamel. The main causes for early childhood cavities are high sugar intake, lack of oral hygiene, lack of fluoride exposure, and enamel defects.

Some of the causes of tooth decay are:

  • Food Habits:  Children are prone to tooth decay due to their love of sweets, chocolates, ice creams, and other sugar enriched foods.
  • Drinks: Fruit juices, sodas, sports drinks, and milk.
  • If your child suffers from chronic allergies, he or she may choose mouth breathing, which interferes with salivation. It is more likely for cavities to occur when saliva flow decreases.
  • Bedtime Feeding: When give milk, juice and other sugary liquids at night, the sugar sits on teeth for hours and feeds bacteria. This damage to teeth is called baby tooth decay. The same can happen to toddlers who drink from sippy cups filled with these liquids. Dental decay in toddlers is a common health concern. You need to treat it quickly and efficiently.
  • Deficiency of Fluoride: Fluoride is a natural mineral which helps in avoiding cavities and reverse the effect of tooth damage in the initial stage. Lack of fluoride will cause tooth decay.

Although there are many causes for early childhood cavities, a regular visit to your dentist will prevent tooth decay and help your child have healthy gums and teeth. Book an appointment online.
